Chessclub is 18+. Matches are played in real-world venues (bars, pubs and cafés) which are licensed premises with their own age policies, and the app arranges meetings between adults who have not met before. Accounts are restricted to adults for that reason.
We ask for your date of birth when you create your profile and refuse to create an account for anyone under 18. By using the app you confirm that you are 18 or over and that the date of birth and other information you provide during sign-up are accurate.
We do not verify identity documents. Checking age at the door is the venue's responsibility, not ours. If we become aware that an account belongs to someone under 18, we will close it.
You are responsible for keeping your account secure. You sign in using your Google account or, on iOS, Sign in with Apple, and you must not share access to your account or let anyone else use it on your behalf.
Chessclub is a platform that helps people organise real-life chess matches. Through the app you can find nearby players, book venues, post and join casual matches, join competitive leagues, track your ELO rating and progress, and message other players.
Chessclub is not an online chess board. Matches are played in person at real-world venues. Chessclub facilitates the arrangement of these matches but does not supervise, control, or take part in the games themselves.
When you join a league, you are placed into a division based on your ELO rating relative to other players who have signed up. League matches affect your ELO rating, standings, streaks, and milestone progress.
You agree to report match results honestly. Deliberately submitting false results, colluding to manipulate ratings or standings, or otherwise abusing the competition may result in removal from a league without refund and, in serious cases, closure of your account.
Chessclub leagues are skill-based competitions, not games of chance. Entry fees are fixed in advance and are the same for every player. Outcomes are determined solely by chess ability. Prizes are fixed and announced in advance. They are not pooled stakes and are not dependent on the number of entrants or on any random element.
Chess is a game of pure skill with no element of chance. League entry fees are participation fees for a season of organised competition, in the same way as an entry fee for a running race, a tennis ladder, or a club tournament. Chessclub does not offer betting, wagering, or any form of gambling, and nothing in the app should be understood as such.
At the end of each league season, prizes may be awarded to the top players in each division as described in the app. Prizes typically include a free entry credit for the following season and, for first place, an additional prize arranged directly by Chessclub.
Some parts of Chessclub are free, and some require payment. Current pricing is shown in the app before you pay. At the time of writing:
All payments are processed securely by Stripe. We do not receive or store your full card details. By making a payment, you also agree to Stripe's terms where applicable. Prices may change over time; any change will apply only to new purchases, not to leagues or memberships you have already paid for.
Annual membership is a one-off payment that grants the listed benefits for twelve months from the date of purchase. For now, annual membership does not renew automatically. We will contact you before your membership expires so you can choose whether to renew. If we introduce automatic renewal in future, we will tell you clearly before you are charged and give you the ability to cancel.
Venue board bookings are non-refundable once confirmed, because the slot is reserved for you and removed from availability for other players.

Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer under UK law.
Venues listed in Chessclub are independent third-party businesses (such as bars, cafés and clubs). Chessclub does not own, operate, or control these venues. A board booking through the app reserves a time slot but is an arrangement made in good faith. We recommend contacting the venue to confirm. Boards and pieces are provided at venues, though you are welcome to bring your own set.
Chessclub is not responsible for the conduct, availability, pricing, safety, or quality of any venue, or for anything that happens at a venue. Your use of a venue is at your own risk and subject to that venue's own rules.
Chessclub arranges in-person meetings between people who may not know each other. Please use common sense: meet in public venues, tell someone where you are going, and trust your instincts. Chessclub does not perform background checks on users.
You are solely responsible for your interactions with other users, both online and in person. Chessclub does not vet, screen, or verify users beyond basic account creation, and we are not responsible for the conduct of any user. If someone makes you feel unsafe or behaves inappropriately, use the block and report tools in the app, and contact the police if you are in danger.
We have zero tolerance for objectionable content and for abusive users. By creating an account you accept these terms, and you agree not to post objectionable content (anything harassing, hateful, threatening, discriminatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise offensive) and not to behave abusively towards anyone using Chessclub, in the app or in person at a venue.
Where we find that someone has, we may remove the content, suspend the account for a period, or remove the account permanently. We may do this without notice. Fees already paid are not refunded when an account is removed for breaching these standards, except where the law requires otherwise.
To keep Chessclub a place people want to be, you agree not to:
We provide block, mute, and report tools so you can manage your own experience, from the three-dot menu on any player's profile, or by long-pressing a message to report it. Every report is read by a person, and where a report warrants it we act on it, including by suspending or permanently removing an account. We do not run automated content scanning, and we cannot promise a response time, but we do read everything, and reporting someone does not automatically suspend them.
We may suspend or close your account if you breach these terms, abuse the community, manipulate the competition, or use the app unlawfully. Where reasonable and appropriate, we will let you know why. You may close your account at any time from within the app or by contacting us. Some information may be retained after closure as described in our Privacy Policy, including payment records we are legally required to keep.
Chessclub, including its name, logo, design, copy, and software, belongs to us and is protected by intellectual property laws. You may use the app for its intended personal, non-commercial purpose. You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, or create derivative works from any part of Chessclub without our written permission. Content you create (such as your profile and messages) remains yours, but you grant us a licence to host and display it as needed to run the service.
We work hard to keep Chessclub running smoothly, but we do not guarantee that the app will always be available, uninterrupted, or error-free. We may update, change, or discontinue features from time to time. We may also update these terms; when we make significant changes we will notify you via the app or by email, and continued use after that constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Chessclub is provided "as is" and we make no warranties beyond those required by law. We are not liable for:
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything that cannot be limited or excluded under UK law. Where we are found liable to you, our total liability will not exceed the amount you have paid to Chessclub in the twelve months before the claim arose.
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
